2:47 pm - 28 weeks later
lulz no that's just how long it's been since I've posted anything

My wife and I are actually posting almost entirely on kateandderek.com now, as we prefer a) having everything on our own site and b) having much more customizeable layout and media options. We mostly post pictures and media anyway, so why not have a site that supports it all?

9:14 am - sometimes life is unexpected
Like when my cat decided that getting up on the stool next to my desk, meowing at me so I pay attention to him, and then doing this:

10:23 pm - our kitten's world debut

Kate spent some time in iMovie and made a real Youtube video. I was impressed (and you should be too!).

11:06 am - newest addition to the family
So, we were planning on this for a while, but hadn't planned on it happening so soon.  But, you know, sometimes things just come up.

No, not a baby, a kitten.

More pictures (and bigger pictures) are here

His name is Juniper and he's a blue abyssinian.  Pedigreed and all.  His top coat is still kitten-y and darker than what he'll probably be as an adult.  Right now he's either playing with a bottlecap, or hiding behind the washing machine.  We've had him since Sunday.  He was born on June 15th so he's 13 weeks old.

10:51 pm - meme theme
but I break memes. So don't comment, i won't give you any letters.

This is the "Comment and I'll give you a letter. In your journal, list 10 of your favorite songs that begin with that letter. I was assigned the letter H. This list is in no particular order" chainpost. I got H from [info]painaporo, so blame him.

i. "Hyped-Up Plus Tax," Dabrye, One/Three.  Bonus that about a half year after I got this song, it showed up as Motorola's RAZR theme.

ii. "H-Bomb," Tino, Tino's Breaks Vol. 1.  Cha cha cha!  Bomba Hache!

iii. "Hindenberg," Town and Country, It All Has To Do With It.  Town and Country are unique in that they're a 4 piece band with no drummer.  They create minimalist music that sounds more like it was created by a modern composer rather than just a band writing songs.  Most of their songs are easy to split into halves or thirds, depending on length, and this pick is the first half of the song.

iv. "Holy Smokes," Aesop Rock, Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives.  A harsh criticism of catholicism and organized religion in support of the artist's agnosticism/atheism.  Aesop Rock is one of the pioneers for returning hip hop to its roots (social commentary) while keeping the production solidly in the now.

v. "High Noon," Kruder & Dorfmeister.  Spaghetti western trip hop.

vi. "Huckenpack," Pole, CD2.  A great example of German micro-house dub, Pole made his name on broken electronics and glitches revealing the bare elements of what makes dub so appealing, from an entirely different point of entry.

vii. "Headspin," Plaid, Not for Threes.  Classic Plaid and classic IDM.  Weird to think it's 10 years old.

viii.  "Happy Cycling," Boards of Canada, Music has the Right to Children.  eh, how many songs can begin with the letter H?  classic etc.

ix.  "Hip Walk," Cal Tjader.  Latin-tinged jazz, smooth without being old folky or elevatory.  sometimes I'm surprised I can find individual tracks like this, cos it's stuff I'd never buy a full album for.

x.  "Heigh Ho," Tom Waits, Orphans.  Most of orphans is blah but this is a surprisingly entertaining cover of the song of the same name from Snow White.

I mean really, who picks H?

I'm pretty pleased with a 92. What is that, an A-?

Personally, I think the payless shoes is what puts us over the top.

12:38 pm - wtf is this
ok, we're married, we own a house, blah blah blah.

we finally broke down and started netflix. a combination of being too poor to buy dvds and a desire to finally watch a bunch of movies we've been curious about (and that we'd never be able to find at a rental store) pushed us over the edge, combined with a lull in mba classes for me and a need to do more relaxing things after working on the house or yard during the day!

First movie was Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love, which is a beautifully shot story of two people who move in next door to each other, only to discover that their busy spouses are cheating on them with each other.

Next is 2046, which is a loose sequel to that movie. Then we're gonna mix it up a bit with Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Double Life of Veronique, which I hadn't even heard of but as we loved his Three Colors trilogy and this is apparently also a very good movie, we're going to try that out.

It is funny that our queue is mostly foreign and drama right now. I've stuck some modern film-noir style movies on there as well. I'll have to see if kate ends up adding anything (she pretty much likes the same kind of movies I like, which makes it convenient for us to get movies as well as allows her to not worry about finding things to watch).

5:35 am - I guess we got married
http://www.kateandderek.com/gallery

It's not that we didn't have them -- we've had them since mid september. We moved hosting plans, though, and kate had a) no time and b) problems with the server and versions of the gallery software we were using.

The short of it is that everything should've worked, but there was a bug that caused it to not work :(

Anyway, we also put new house pictures up. Whee!!

6:15 pm - i'm f'n medieval
my african american coworker said she was going to the renaissance festival this weekend and 2 other people said "you too!?" and she said "oh hell no, I'm not going now."

They're now trying to get her to dress up when she goes. She just told me "hey derek, I should dress up for the harlem renaissance!"

I think a harlem renaissance festival could be big.

10:12 am - Major update: it's mostly done!
Let's get these out of the way (pictures)

Lot's happened in the last few weeks. Took a breather from the heavy duty work after moving in, focusing on the little things and some wedding things. And then really worked on getting everything finished up downstairs. The pictures pretty much say it all.

As for what's left, mostly in order:
- finish moving things around and setting things up
- strip and install the interior doors
- pad out laundry room, install insulation and dry wall and paint
- build landing steps for laundry room (currently a stack of concrete pavers)
- install new bottom cabinets and countertop in kitchen, paint walls, install crown moulding

luckily most everything that's indoors and important is done. the laundry room has turned into the storage room, so it's not a big rush to finish (definitely after the wedding!). the doors are pretty important but we'll likely get that done in the next week or so, especially with kate's parent's coming out next weekend and able to help :D

Still, it feels weird moving stuff in and living downstairs, especially compared to what it was. It's too fancy for what we're used to :D

12:16 pm - week 7?
Honestly i don't know if it's week 7 anymore. All i know is that we're moved in and living in the house now. It's been a very weird but very awesome last few days, mostly because it's a new place and it's ours. very weird feeling :D

11:42 pm - two updates?
But short ones, due to crappy pictures/not taking enough.

Of course, when you've done one thing, it's kind of hard to take a lot of pictures of it. Like, "hey, this is the cold air return.. from another angle!"

Of course the person who helped out and took the photographs this time focus on the people, instead of the work.. hmm... so we don't actually have a picture of the cold air return. Don't worry... there's more updates to come :D

oh, pics!. They're the 5b and 6.

8:02 am - major renovation, pt 2
Part 2 is because the electrician already came out. This one's a doozy, though!

Here's pictures

our carpenter came out on Saturday and framed in a new door in the back (different location), and installed it. Then on Sunday, he framed and installed a new huge 4'x7' window we bought. And then we wrapped the house and waterproofed the exterior. You can see in the "before" pictures how poorly the roofline was done, as well as just general stuff about how *not* to put in a new room.

Before all that, we replaced some plaster with some drywall, and while the carpenter was here, kate painted the upstairs. Now the ceilings are done upstairs, and the walls are primed and just waiting for the floors.

So now we're all set. Today the floor guys are coming out, and then we're just about done!

11:07 am - more pix!
Another house update!

Pictures available here

This was the week we bought the majority of our shit. We now have paint and rollers and power saws and a new door for the back.. and all new appliances on their way. I also apparently turned into a plumber, although not a very good one!

9:20 am - week 3 progress!
Here's pictures for week 3

http://kateandderek.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=5750

Notable events:

We took our first trip to the city building materials public dump! It's free for city residents although they didn't check anything... Anyway we got rid of a ton of old flooring :D

We mudded up the ceiling in the hallway and stairway. Now they need to be sanded, but it's pretty sad that the mud texture still looks better than what was there

The floors are just about ready to go... but we found old termite damage! yow! We had pulled up almost all of the paper-backed linoleum downstairs, and against the wall in the middle room, I had started pulling up one of the last pieces and I heard a sickening old wood cracking noise... and a good chunk of the floor came up with the paper, nails and all. It's all very old and brittle, but the planks are totally shot in about a 5 foot by 3 foot area :( Luckily we've got good flooring guys coming, and when I told them about it, they said "oh, no problem, we'll probably cut them out when we're sanding and then pop new ones in the next day. They may not be an exact match, though," to which we replied that anything is better than termite damage. You can see in the pictures that while it's not a large area, the wood is completely ruined. Luckily the joists are still just fine!

We've denailed the front room. You can see just how many nails there were.

We also started testing paint colors, and Kate's whitewashed the mantel-thing.

And more to come! We have an electrician in there today rebranching everything inside and wiring up outside lights.

3:15 pm - pix of renovation process
can be found here:

http://kateandderek.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=5655

Notable events:

I've installed a new toilet. I'm happy it's something that happens infrequently.

We've removed all of the carpet in the house. In the process of removing the baseboards downstairs, kate discovered how far down the original wood floors were on the 1st floor. We found that the vinyl tile isn't glued to the floor, but rather to a paperboard pad that's nailed down. So we're ripping that up entirely.

The back "laundry room" was just a drab dark room, but we discovered a window and door cutout, like in the picture. We're actually going to put in a very large window there, and move the door to the cutout (making it a little larger).

there's a light popcorn-style texture in the downstairs, and the upstairs hall and stairway had a faux-stucco texture that was old enough to be yellowing. The faux-stucco was TOUGH so that inevitably became my first major job ;D But that's all down, leaving just the downstairs which should be a piece of cake.

We've got an electrician coming in to rebranch the electric and add dedicated outlets for the fridge and new dishwasher. he's gonna do some other stuff to. We have a floor guy coming out on the 5th to refinish all of the original wood floors in the house. And we've got a carpenter coming out over the July 1-4th holiday weekend to frame in the new door and new window in the back laundry room, turning it into practically a sunroom.

We've been working our butts off, but it's been amazing. Fun too :D And even though it feels like we're just taking things apart, exposing the floor has made it feel like we're bringing the house back to being itself, instead of simply adding another layer on top of it. We were going to float a wood floor but even though this is more work, it's going to be so much nicer ;D We're pretty excited.
